Just when you think there is little new happening in the optical profession, the online forums come alive with a debate regarding the possible opening of a new optometry department. Following rumours that the University of Hertfordshire wants to open a new department, an online petition was set up calling for the course to be stopped and numbers on optometry courses to be capped. The site states: ‘Stop Hertfordshire is a campaign to bring the optometry job market under control. With recent reports of Hertfordshire University creating an optometry degree, we believe that the job market for optometrists will become saturated.’
