View from ABDO: These are our aspirations for DOs

ABDO hopes dispensing opticians can play a vital role in the provision of community services

In light of the growing opportunities for optometrist progression, ABDO is very hopeful and confident dispensing opticians (DO) can play a vital role in provision of community services in the foreseeable future.

Speaking at the NOC, I outlined ABDO’s aspirations for DOs and offered an overview of the structural changes taking place within the Association; which sees the introduction of a National Clinical Committee and the formation of seven ABDO regions.

With effect from January 1, 2017, ABDO will operate with one overarching clinical committee which will be responsible for all professional matters and engaging with stakeholders to offer insight into the capabilities of the DO. In many cases, the profession does not wholly understand the remit and responsibilities a DO has, which is a real shame. This is not restricted to the FBDO qualification, but also contact lenses and low vision.
