Locsu is set to boost its support for Clinical Governance & Performance Leads (CGPLs).

With around 30 Primary Eyecare Companies (PECs) actively delivering eye care services, the CGPL fulfils a vital role to both LOCs who use the model and to CCGs who can see the attraction in dealing with one local eye care delivery expert who supplies real-time data on activity and cost.

The individual optometrist or optician who is appointed to the CGPL role is also an important link with those delivering services, such as Mecs, in participating practices; ensuring the optical profession delivers on the contract.

We know that the NHS commissioning landscape evolves into Sustainable Transformation Partnerships (STPs) – PECs will need to mirror this and consolidate. Fewer but larger PECs will see the CGPL role become much more critical. Locsu wants to be able to offer CGPLs more support.

To get ahead of the curve, we are introducing a series of initiatives to support CGPLs. These tackle succession-planning, so that the sector has a ready-trained pool of potential recruits to draw from.

We urge LOCs to ensure their NOC delegation includes their PEC CGPL. We have appointed a new digital support learning officer to spearhead our CGPL support. Simone Mason, a CGPL with Heart of West Midlands PEC, will host a special pre-NOC forum for CGPLs on November 8. It will look to build closer links among the CGPL community, including plans for a new, dedicated online forum, best practice tactics and sharing Webstar and Data Repository information.

Other support for CGPLs will include a new coaching and mentoring service due shortly.
