Concerns and uncertainty about job security have risen following the EU referendum. These are not unique concerns to optics but tailored advice for the sector is essential for those starting a job or having issues in their role.
In the current climate, the AOP is approached by employees and employer members on a variety of topics. These can range from individuals bringing grievances or under threat of disciplinary action to employers wanting advice on redundancy. Inevitably, issues sometimes arise during employment and it is important individuals involved receive practical advice that outlines basic employment rights.
In a changeable landscape it is increasingly important individuals are helped at each stage of employment. The AOP has a dedicated in-house employment law service providing independent advice to employees and employers with legal queries.
As legal specialists working solely for the optical profession, we give guidance on the law but we also understand the importance of ensuring career continuity and maintaining working relationships. Where relationships do break down, we give advice on unfair dismissal, discrimination and redundancy rights and can provide information about tribunals.
The service has further offerings in the form of its companion service, and a pre-registration contract query service. Vitally, the companion service enables AOP members to have trade union accompaniment if they face disciplinary action or are involved in a grievance process.
We have also developed employment contract templates for qualified and non-qualified staff and locums. In the new year, we will be launching downloadable versions of these templates.
