View from the BCLA: Invaluable dry eye research

BCLA
Findings from TFOS DEWS II report will be presented at the BCLA conference

The first UK unveiling of the clinical findings from the TFOS DEWS II report will be presented at the BCLA’s 40th anniversary Conference – informing eye care practitioners how to diagnose and manage dry eyes over the next decade.

The research will be presented by Associate Professor Jennifer Craig and Professor James Wolffsohn on the first day of the three-day conference in Liverpool this June.

The original Tear Film and Ocular Surface Society Dry Eye Workshop (DEWS; 2007) brought together researchers and clinicians who were experts in dry eye to inform the definition, diagnosis and management of the condition and better understand its epidemiology and pathophysiology.

Ten years on and the process has now been repeated, this time with 150 researchers and clinicians from 23 countries to move forward understanding of the disease.

The chairs of the definition, diagnostic methodology and management and therapy panels will present the findings of their committees with an emphasis on how this impacts day to day clinical practice.

Diagnosis will be performed live on stage and a video showing how to perform diagnostic and management techniques will be presented.

It represents a window into the future of dry eye management. It is a subject area changing rapidly and these latest findings will shape the way all of us deal with dry eye patients in future.

With dry eye such a fast-growing problem for so many patients this up-to-the-minute research will prove invaluable as we continue to understand the disease and discover new ways of diagnosing it, treating it and managing it – improving the quality of life for all our patients.
