
The optical industry is known for its innovation and precision. And it’s these strengths that will help the sector address the challenge of waste. The sector produces a considerable volume of material, including single use diagnostic tools, for which it is difficult to find sustainable options. In an era where sustainability is no longer a niche concern but a business imperative, it’s time to shift our perspective – from seeing waste as an unavoidable by-product to recognising its untapped value.
Every optical practice, lab and manufacturer generates waste at various stages of the supply chain. For example, polycarbonate lenses, acetate frame offcuts, blister packs, cleaning cloths, microfibre wipes and plastic lens bags accumulate quickly. Add to that the everyday disposables – contact lens packaging, lens cleaning solutions and promotional material – and the environmental footprint of the sector becomes hard to ignore.
