Who will pay for health advice from OOs?

I wholeheartedly support everything that Moneo writes about optometry taking on greater responsibilities for ocular healthcare (11.03.16, p8) – and if not us then who will?

However, I would like to know who will pay the chair time required for these discussions. A recent report highlighted that the general public prefer to visit their GP for a free consultation when they can see that they have eye problems, so I consider it very unlikely they will pay a sight test fee for advice on unseen possible health conditions – and the NHS/GOS fee is not going to help us. Store-based opticians will be accused of promoting in-store health foods and supplements while high street opticians will have to charge even higher sight test fees to cover their overheads.
