Will peace ever break out between the multiples and the independents?

I was interested to read Richard Payne's comment on the Question Time discussion at Optrafair.

His basic point is that in every other walk of retail life the volume and independents sectors live side by side and no one seems to bat an eyelid. In optics it continues to be a sticking point. Why not watch the discussion and let me know what you think?
