Over the last few months Optician has run a series of articles which have looked at domiciliary eye care:

Once you have familiarised yourself with the material in these articles, please consider the following scenario.

A patient contacts your practice concerning her 84 year old mother who lives alone, has difficulty leaving the house and has recently complained of difficulty with her eyesight. She has not had any eye assessment for over five years and has consented to allowing her daughter to contact you to arrange for a domiciliary visit. Initial questioning suggests she is unlikely to have any sight impairment beyond uncorrected refractive error.

The task of preparing for the visit falls to you. Discuss with a GOC registered colleague the following:

  • What equipment (instruments and dispensing materials) would you have ready to take on the visit? Remember there might be a minimum requirement, but also that too exhaustive a list might be impractical
  • What paperwork (name any specific documentation relevant to your area of practice) would you have available for the visit?
  • Who did you discuss this with?

When you are ready, click on the link below and enter your answers.

If our review panel feel there is a need for a little more clarity in your response, they will email you to further discussions. If acceptable, your point will be uploaded upon review. The CET exercise is active until 20/08/2015 and points will be uploaded periodically throughout this period.
