A glass apart

Serengeti recommends that customers test drive its sunglass lenses, placing pure fashion in the back seat for that journey

There aren't many sunglass firms that urge consumers not to look in the mirror when trying on their designs, but instead to look outside to check out the performance of the lens.

That's the case with Serengeti, which has even more reason to be confident about the performance of its glass lenses, having introduced the Ultra-Light version that is 20 per cent thinner and lighter than its predecessor. The new lens does not lose any of Serengeti's famed qualities as the borosilicate optical glass puck goes through the same process as before - once it is diamond ground, it is laser inspected before being chemically tempered for scratch and impact resistance. Next the photochromic technology and Spectral Control are activated by the high temperature of the patented Hydrogen Firing Process. Once this is completed the lenses are coated with a seven-layer optical anti-reflective coating to eliminate back surface reflections, while the lens edges are coated for added protection.
