In the second of a short series from the recent European Academy of Optometry and Optics conference in Barcelona, Bill Harvey hears how technology is making eye care more accessible

More than 600 delegates from around the world were treated to an array of lectures, workshops and seminars covering a wide range of optometric and optical subjects (figures 1 and 1a). In this report, we will focus on a session looking at telemedicine and portable technologies.

Telemedicine

The term telemedicine describes the remote diagnosis or analysis of clinical data that has been captured and transferred from an examination, often undertaken by a trained technician in even the least accessible environments.

To some extent, diabetic retinopathy screening schemes have been undertaking a form of telemedicine for many years and it was this subject that was the focus of much of a talk from ophthalmologist Stela Vujosevic of the University of Pavlova.
