A powerful movement

Danish eyewear brand MonkeyGlasses opened its first practice in Copenhagen in November 2019. The company’s CEO and designer Mai-britt Seaton tells Andrew McClean about how sustainability was translated from its products to its store

Andrew McClean: What did you set out to achieve by creating a sustainable practice?

Mai-britt Seaton: The MonkeyGlasses project emerged 10 years ago, when Morten and I started researching the options for buying environmentally and socially responsible glasses. It took much more hard work than we could have imagined, but we ended up with a product we could be truly proud of.

As we saw the thrill among conscious consumers, the project just kept growing. With dedicated resellers emerging across the globe, we outgrew our living room and got a small office that operated as a design studio, central communications, accounting space, stock storage and showroom. When our lease was up, we were offered a similar space that had a storefront and we just could not pass that chance up. The thrill of seeing a customer put on the perfect pair of glasses was so satisfying when we visited retailers.
