Indie Grewal talks to Chris Bennett about pandemic practises, lessons learned and life after lockdown

Convenience is a word that slips from the tongue of British Contact Lens Association (BCLA) president, Indie Grewal, with frequent regularity but his year in office was marked by a level of inconvenience no one could have predicted.

When Grewal delivered his inaugural address, virtually, last September the UK was on the cusp of a Covid wave that would sweep the country into its second lockdown of 2020. His period in office will cease in the summer at a second virtual BCLA conference ending an unpredictable and unprecedented period of office. So how has it been?

‘It’s flown,’ says Grewal, who hands over to Neil Retallic, European professional services director at Menicon, in June. ‘The year couldn’t have been more different than expected. The pandemic started in March and we thought we would be out of it by June. We were still looking forward to a BCLA UK conference in Birmingham, but as we got to April it became inevitable that it wasn’t going to happen.’
