Our series on UK optometry departments continues with a visit to Anglia Ruskin University. Emma White reports.

Cambridge-based Anglia Ruskin University has been running courses in ophthalmic dispensing since September 1989.

In 1998 it introduced the BOptom optometry degree and it now offers a full range of courses including a degree in optical management. Part-time courses include a three-year university diploma and foundation degree in ophthalmic dispensing. A year-long part-time course for optical assistants is also available.

The optometry degree course requires A level grades ABB in science subjects or mathematics, while the ophthalmic dispensing course prefers three C grade A levels in science-based subjects. The department has its own optometry clinic with 12 consulting rooms, specialised technique areas, instrumentation rooms, dispensary and reception area. The academic staff of 19 includes optometrists, ophthalmic dispensers and one ophthalmologist. There are three visiting professors, a number of visiting clinical supervisors and technical and administrative support staff.
