Optom Kirit Patel discusses a common corneal condition and management without referral

A 42-year-old male, RS, was a high-flying chief executive of a major hotel group who had started to experience blurred vision in the right eye. He was travelling extensively and found he was increasingly having to apply over-the-counter ocular lubricant drops (Systane Hydration Lubricant Eye Drops, containing sodium hyaluronate and hydroxypropyl guar; Alcon) in an effort to minimise the problem.


Clinical findings 2003:


Our findings were relayed to the patient and the recommended course of treatment was to blow a hair dryer over the eyes twice a day to relieve the corneal stroma of water. This regime was followed by the patient continuously from 2003 to 2020. RS reported from the outset that his vision was better whenever he undertook the hair dryer treatment and vision was blurred if he missed this treatment.
