In focus: Consultation offers insight into optom apprenticeship

Details emerge of an optometry apprenticeship expected to be approved by the Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education by next year. Simon Jones reports

More details of a proposed degree level optometrist apprenticeship standard have emerged following the launch of a six-week sector consultation by Skills for Health.

The Healthcare Apprentice Standards Online (HASO) consultation was opened to input from the sector late last month. Skills for Health said the 48-month Level 7 degree was expected to be approved for delivery by the Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education (IFATE) in autumn of next year.

Details of employers and associations involved in the development of the standard were also outlined. The list included the College, the Association of Optometrists, ABDO and the University of Hertfordshire.

A full list of current participants can be found below. Victoria Unsworth, chair of the Optometry Trailblazer Group, which submitted the plans to the Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education in September, said: ‘The optical sector is working together to help attract people into the optometry profession and retain them.
