The Mozambique Eye Care Project, funded by Irish Aid, has delivered a sustainable optometrist training programme and improved eye care services. Mike Hale reports

Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT) hosted a ‘Celebration of Vision’ conference event last month to mark the achievements of the Mozambique Eye Care Project (MEP).

The MEP was incepted in 2008 and since then stakeholders have worked towards the goal of reducing preventable blindness and alleviating poverty.

The project has been successful in establishing the first ever optometry degree programme in Mozambique at the University of Lúrio and the country now has fully qualified optometrists delivering eye care to the population. More optometrists are due to graduate this year, with the longer term aim of having 170 qualified Mozambican optometrists delivering eye care in the country by 2020.
