In Focus: Sector responds to frozen GOS fees

A decision by the government to freeze the NHS sight test fees in England for another year from April has been met with blanket disappointment across the optical sector

It was confirmed this week that the 2015-16 level for general ophthalmic services of £21.31 was to remain for 2016-17. Grants for CET, to train pre-registration optometrists and patient voucher values were increased by 1%.

Widespread frustration and disappointment followed across the independent sector, to what was described by Optometric Fees Negotiating Committee chair Mike George as ‘a bitter blow to many’.

George added: ‘As a sector we are playing – and continue to play – key roles in the NHS England Five Year Forward View plans to transfer care to the community to take pressure off GPs, A&E and hospitals, as well as in the Government’s devolution plans. And yet once again it seems that those who deliver fully against contracts are penalised whilst those who do not are rewarded.
