In focus: Future of optics relies on Mecs and specs

Mecs vs Specs was the theme for a Question Time session at this year’s Optrafair, where the panel discussed striking a balance between clinical eye care services and spectacle sales. Joe Ayling reports from Birmingham

Question Time panellists at this year’s Optrafair were asked whether high street optics should focus on the provision of community eye care schemes or the latest eyewear.

The group, including an ophthalmologist, professional advancement chief and government adviser, seemed likely to sway towards clinical services, and a huge amount of Mecs contracts have reached the high street of late.

However, locum dispensing optician panellist Dan Scott urged delegates not to underestimate the potential of high end spectacle dispensing.

After an hour of measured debate, the central question of Mecs or specs had been diverted for a compromise of Mecs and specs.
