In focus: Getting the message across in National Eye Health Week

Zoe Wickens looks at how the optical industry engaged with and raised awareness of National Eye Health Week 2019

National Eye Health Week (NEHW) 2019 took place from September 23-29 and focused on promoting the need for regular eye examinations and the importance of better eye health. Organised by Vision Matters, the annual awareness drive allows opticians practices, organisations and charities to plan events and campaigns around themes of frequent eye tests, nutrition, eye care for children and the elderly, the effect of smoking on sight loss, screen fatigue, and better awareness of eye conditions and diseases.

Multiples

Specsavers teamed up with several celebrities in order to raise awareness of NEHW.

Football pundit Ian Wright urged people to have regular eye examinations after joining a television campaign for the multiple. The eye health awareness campaign will be live throughout September and October to promote NEHW, with the former Arsenal striker wanting to support it as he felt it put ‘a spotlight on the need for everyone to take care of their eyes, highlighting the conditions that could be preventable or better managed through regular checks.’
