Interview: Doug Perkins, Joint CEO Specsavers

An expected migration of more hospital services has triggered Specsavers to shift its focus from bargain offers to minor eye condition services (Mecs). The company’s joint CEO and founder Doug Perkins spoke to Optician at a House of Lords reception in partnership with the RNIB. Joe Ayling reports

When husband and wife team Dame Mary and Doug Perkins started a fledgling optical business 32 years ago, Rod Stewart had reached the height of his fame having enjoyed a number of platinum selling albums and world tours.

They are now on first name terms with the singer, who attended a high profile House of Lords reception to support the eye health cause last month.

However, on the day in question Doug Perkins is more intent on talking Mecs than sex, drugs and rock ’n’ roll. Having spent many years travelling the globe expanding the Specsavers empire, Perkins has turned his attention to the domestic issue of preventable sight loss and setting up a network of practices to provide enhanced optical services.
