Mike Hale travels to Kent to visit PKP Optics and see the prescription house’s new digital surfacing equipment in operation

With several optical labs going out of business due to tough operating conditions in recent years, there is an onus on those remaining to innovate in order to better serve practices. PKP Optics has answered this call by recently adding digital freeform surfacing equipment to its production facility in Paddock Wood, Kent.

‘We see ourselves as a one-stop shop because we have glazing, surfacing and repairs under one roof,’ says Matthew Perrett, managing director at PKP. ‘We have been looking for the next step to make us more competitive in the market and freeform is the way to go. Our market is independent practices and they’re looking for high quality and good value. We’ve always traded on quality of product. So this investment is about just making us even more competitive in that area.’
