Keeping an eye on the Eidon

It is nearly two years (Optician 27.03.15) since I first tried out the CenterVue Eidon wide-field confocal scanner from (distributed in the UK by Haag Streit UK). Essentially, the unit is a scanning ophthalmoscope that uses white light instead of monochromatic lasers, hence providing true colour imaging and offering major benefits in terms of fidelity to real retinal appearance, no distortion and dilation-free operation.

The result was very precise and crisp images (figure 1). It was also notable that the operation of the camera from the appended tablet screen was simplicity itself. Capture is, in essence, a ‘single touch task’ and the camera and fixation within are easily programmed to produce high quality mosaic images covering a wide field of retina (figure 2).
