Look local: Independent outpost’s challenge

Will a new Specsavers store cause a threat to independent practices in Leigh-on-sea? Jo Gallacher reports

As a town where independent businesses flourish, Leigh-on-sea in Essex has always been a popular spot with both residents and tourists. The small fishing town has only recently accepted the likes of Costa Coffee and Subway, chains which have had a huge presence for a number of years in other towns and cities across the UK. It therefore came as a surprise when Specsavers announced it would soon be opening a store in the town next door to independent practice Broadway Opticians. Scepticism over Specsavers’ role in Leigh-on-sea has already begun to arise.

Broadway Opticians co-owner Paul Sayer says business is currently booming. ‘We’re a well-established independent practice which has been providing eye care for the community since World War II. Like many independents our success can be largely attributed to our commitment towards professionalism and expertise which has helped foster a loyal following.’
