Zoe Wickens travelled to Market Drayton to find out how an independent practice is making waves and changing lives through the use of eyewear styling consultations

Market Drayton, a small, and quiet town in Shropshire, boasts a secret in the form of Mincher-Lockett & Co. Opticians, winner of the Fashion Practice of the Year Award at the Optician Awards 2019.

Revamped four years ago to what it looks like today, it is the home to the Eyewear Styling Academy founded by optometrist Eva Davé. Along with her husband Sam, also an optometrist, Davé took over the practice in 2011 after doing locum work for a few years.

In 2014, the practice was struggling and they thought they might have to shut up shop for good. Davé decided that something had to change. ‘We had to adapt or close basically. I decided to think about what sort of practice I’d enjoy working in, so we went from there,’ she said. ‘There was nothing out there like the Eyewear Styling Academy and I wanted to do something that would help the practice. As optical experts, we should really know what frame shapes, sizes and colours would suit people.’
