Dr Scott Mackie reports from a conference considering the advantages of swept source optical coherence tomography and angiography

The first International Swept Source OCT Conference was held in Madrid recently as part of the global Topcon University. With co-organisers Dr Catherine Chisholm and Professor Carl Glittenberg at the helm, delegates enjoyed a plethora of speakers and topics with two keynotes by ophthalmologists Dr Rick Spaide (USA) and Professor James Fujimoto (Japan).

Swept Source (SS-OCT)

SS-OCT is the fastest, deepest penetrating scanner currently available and is used in the Topcon Triton DRI (Deep Range Imaging) OCT instrument. With a longer 1,050nm incident wavelength, compared to the conventional 800nm, the Triton extends its versatility by being able to better penetrate tissues and offers exceptional views of the choroidal vasculature. In addition, the faster 100,000 A-scan/sec, along with invisible scan lines reducing errors from involuntary eye movements, produces higher resolution scans. En face imaging, autofluoresence and angiography via OCT-A are additional modules.
