Torics: Get astigmatism covered

Mike Hale rounds up the top contact lenses available for patients with astigmatism

Coopervision

MyDay toric
According to CooperVision, MyDay toric is for astigmatic patients who demand high performance without compromise on vision, comfort, health or handling. The lens is said to utilise Optimised Toric Lens Geometry, the same technology found in Biofinity toric, to deliver predictable, consistent visual acuity, and superior lens stability, fit and comfort. Additionally the company says the lens is powered by Smart Silicone Chemistry to offer a unique balance of high oxygen permeability, high water content and optimum modulus for a soft and flexible lens that delivers comfort, plus a built-in UV blocker.

Alcon

Precision1 for Astigmatism
Alcon says learnings from a previous lens allowed the development of its Smart Surface technology, which is utilised in its Precision1 for Astigmatism lens and allows for a water surface content greater than 80%. The technology involves a micro-thin layer of moisture (~2-3 microns) that steps up from 51% water content at the core to greater than 80% at the outer surface. Alcon says this trusted stabilisation design enables a 95% first-lens fit success rate thanks to supporting optimal orientation, lens fit, movement and position.

Menicon

Miru 1day Flat Pack toric
According to Menicon, the Miru 1day Flat Pack toric is an innovative eco-friendly, easy to handle and comfortable to wear daily disposable toric lens that features the company’s Smart Touch and Smart Fit technologies. The lens is described as having a bi-aspheric thinner design with a smooth low edge profile that anatomically matches the eyelid contours, self-orientates on the eye and stabilises to prevent axis rotation. Menicon says this provides clear stable vision and accounts for small lens/eye axis misalignment through sophisticated meridional aberration management control. Furthermore the lens material is said to effectively bind tears, lock in moisture and provide rapid lens rehydration with every blink, combined with a minimal average thickness profile to further enhance comfort. Additionally Menicon’s well known flat packaging avoids the need to touch the inner lens surface on application, allowing for a cleaner wearing experience.

Safilens

Fusion 1day astigma
Safilens says to be effective a toric daily disposable has to properly stabilise, be consistent and, unlike a frequent replacement lens, be thin and comfortable on first fitting. With this in mind, Safilens developed a new toric lens design for Fusion 1day astigma with minimum decentration between surfaces and with inner toricity. The unique SleekForm stability design is said to use a minimum pure prism profile to achieve quick and precise orientation without the need of enhanced thickness zones in the lens. The lens uses and also benefits from the company’s Fusion technology, in which the synergistic actions of hyaluronic acid and TSP normalise and keep the physiological relation between tear film and ocular surface stable with the aim of giving wearers natural and longer-lasting comfort.
