Andrew Brennan, a technology lawyer at commercial law firm SGH Martineau, explains the legal requirements of practice websites

Whether your website has been designed to sell contact lenses online or just show visitors around your practice, highlighting the frames you stock and how to find you, it must meet the minimum legal requirements for corporate websites.

Many businesses are unaware of the law on websites, mistakenly believing the rules only apply to e-commerce sites and those selling to consumers.

In reality, the website of any UK registered business must display the company name, place of registration, registered number, registered office address, VAT number and the details of any regulator if the business undertakes any regulated activities.

For sole traders and partnerships, the address of the principal place of business must be shown. Businesses which use their website to sell products, services or digital content to consumers must provide certain information about the offering and right to cancel.
