Cataract implant options demonstrated in new hand-held simulator

Clinical
New device lets practitioners show properties of intraocular lenses to patients

Researchers at the Instituto de Optica in Spain have published information on its new intraocular lens simulator device in The Optical Society’s journal, Optica.

In the article researcher Carlos Dorronsoro explained that the device, entitled SimVis, has been designed to enable practitioners to demonstrate the properties of several types of intraocular lenses to cataract patients, in order to support an important choice prior to the lens implant procedure.

Dorronsoro said: ‘Currently, the decision on which intraocular lens is implanted during cataract surgery is typically based on the explanations and experience of the surgeon. But it is difficult for patients to imagine the new visual experience provided by some of these lenses, therefore, it is very difficult to make the decision. Clinical use of the SimVis could provide an evidence-based way to assess the subjective needs and preferences of patients before they undergo cataract surgery.’
