Moorfields creates first systematic review using AI in medical diagnostics

Researchers at Moorfields Eye Hospital and other institutions have created the first systematic review and meta-analysis using artificial intelligence (AI) in medical diagnostics.

Results suggested that AI has the ability to detect diseases from medical images to a similar level of accuracy as an actual health care professional.

Consultant ophthalmologist at Moorfields Eye Hospital Pearse Keane said: ‘The results in this analysis show promise for using AI to help diagnose disease, but they do not suggest that AI could replace the role of ophthalmologists. It is clear that we need more studies in this area to include in future analyses to get a better idea of how accurate AI is as a diagnostic tool.’
