Patients are being encouraged to care for their contact lenses thanks to a Love Your Lenses Week headed by the General Optical Council (GOC).

The Love Your Lenses campaign will provide patient-friendly information and ideas to help eye care professionals celebrate the many benefits of contact lenses while reminding wearers of the need to treat contact lenses in the correct way.

Research conducted by the GOC found some contact lens wearers fail to follow clinical advice, for example 44% of contact lens wearers shower in their lenses.

GOC director of strategy Alistair Bridge said: ‘Contact lenses are enjoyed safely and loved by millions of people. If they are looked after properly they are safe and effective, but our research has shown that not all contact lens wearers know how to do this. We will be working with stakeholders across the optical sector to remind all contact lens wearers, including people who wear cosmetic lenses, to go for an eye-check at least once a year.’

The GOC has created a campaign toolkit to help organisations get involved in the week, which will run from March 25-31.
