GOC hosts quarterly meeting

GOC approves project plan for its Education Strategic Review

A quarterly meeting was held by the GOC in London last week – where a project plan for its Education Strategic Review was approved.

The regulator will conduct research to learn lessons from education of healthcare professionals in both the UK and overseas and has formed an expert advisory group.

GOC chair Gareth Hadley said: ‘The focus of the review is on equipping the registrants of the future for the roles they will be expected to perform and instill in them a desire for professional development throughout their careers.

‘It is also important that we recognise that delivering enhanced primary eye care services to an ageing population requires investment in the education and training of existing optometrists and dispensing opticians.’

The Optical Consumer Complaints Service presented its annual report for 2016-17 during the meeting, including a 45 per cent increase in enquiries compared to 2015-16.

The GOC also discussed the impact of its Love Your Lenses campaign in March.
