Luxottica in bid to halt Armani counterfeiting

The Corporate Security department at Luxottica UK has unearthed a consignment of counterfeit Giorgio Armani ophthalmic frames with the help of police and trading standards officers.

Luxottica UK's commercial director Alan Niblo said that, as the investigation was ongoing, it was not possible to give details of where the raid had taken place, but added that the copies were of good quality. 'They have been sent to Italy where our quality control have sent us a written statement that the frames are fake. 'Although counterfeit ophthalmic frames are not uncommon in the UK, it is unusual that they have found their way on to the wall-bars of practices, as a trained eye should readily identify them as counterfeit.' A handful of top-selling styles that were easy to copy had been found, lacking the cases or authenticity numbers as provided with legitimate Armani product. Mr Niblo estimated that the volume of frames manufactured by the counterfeiters could be well into four figures. Counterfeit Calvin Klein product was also uncovered in the raid. Investigations had revealed the counterfeit Armani frames had been bought by practitioners and sold to UK consumers. If a practitioner has inadvertently purchased some of the counterfeit frames, Luxottica recommends that they be withdrawn from sale immediately and kept. Luxottica is the only authorised/licensed distributor in the UK for Armani frames and sunglasses. Practitioners should contact Paolo Contini, Corporate Security at Luxottica UK headquarters on 0208 830 0393, or fax on 0208 4590211.
