Making transport accessible

Funding of £2m has been announced by the Department for Transport (DfT) for bus operators to improve audible and visual on-board information.

It was hoped that the funding would improve accessibility to public transport for the visually and hearing impaired.
DfT is working in collaboration with the Real Time Information Group (RTIG) to allocate the funding to small bus operators who may find updating their audio and visual information systems costly.

General manager of the RTIG Tim Rivett said: ‘Audio visual information helps reduce barriers to travel and increases confidence in public transport for all passengers, but particularly disabled passengers.’

This funding comes as part of the government’s Inclusive Transport Strategy, which aims to provide equal access to the transport network by 2030.
