Moorfields consultant named UK’s Australian of the Year

A consultant at Moorfields has been named the UK’s Australian of the Year

Professor Lyndon da Cruz, consultant retinal surgeon and medical retina specialist at Moorfields Eye Hospital has been awarded Australian of the Year in the UK 2020.

The award, which is led by the Australia Day Foundation, recognises an Australian who has excelled in the UK and made a significant contribution to relations between the two countries.

It is the highest honour given by Australia House, with previous winners including Professor Germaine Greer, Clive James and Kylie Minogue.

Speaking about the award, Professor da Cruz said: ‘It has been a real honour to receive this award. I am grateful to my mentors and the many colleagues who have supported me throughout my career so far. I hope to continue to make a positive impact on the lives of patients’ with retinal diseases.’

Professor da Cruz received the award in recognition of his career achievements such as being the clinical lead of the London Project to Cure Blindness, leading the Argus II artificial retina programme at Moorfields Eye Hospital and teaching surgery to doctors in developing countries.
