Nemo should be our inspiration

For some time now I have given up reading Nemo's column. It surprises and depresses me that one of the top optometry journals should publish material so obviously anti-optometrist. Just one of many examples of Nemo's views comes from years ago where he spotted a new change on the distant horizon. One practice had opened up and it was owned and run by an OMP and dispensing optician. At the time Nemo was heralding this as a new norm for optics. Wrong again Nemo.

Nemo should be an inspiration, challenging us to aspire to new heights of professionalism and not constantly rattling on about 'shopticians' who are not medically qualified and who should really stick to selling spectacles. What an inspiration. Forget the frontiers of therapeutics, shared care and professional improvement, let's all join Nemo's bandwagon and sell our wares from stalls down the high street. Thankfully Omen does his best to make up for Nemo's biased views. I urge optician to replace Nemo with someone who is passionate about optics, or at least to canvass its subscribers' views on this matter. And on a final note dedicated to Nemo, I foresee a time when optometry and ophthalmology amalgamate into one course, lasting seven years, at the three-year stage a Bsc Optom and at the seven-year finals FRCS status - a bit like dentistry. I wonder will my far sight be as acute as Nemo's or maybe I should just start dusting off my stall? Aengus Morrin Tunbridge Wells, Kent submitted to www.optometryonline.net
