Nicola Adams retires from boxing due to medical advice concerning her sight

Yorkshire boxer Nicola Adams has announced her retirement from the sport due to medical advice concerning her sight.

The 37-year-old Olympic gold boxing champion revealed the news exclusively to the Yorkshire Evening Post, explaining that she wanted the people of her hometown of Leeds to be the first to know as they have ‘championed’ her from the start of her career.

She said: ‘I’m immensely honoured to have represented our country – to win double Olympic gold medals and then the WBO championship belt is a dream come true… But it’s not without taking its toll on my body, and aside from the expected aches and pains - I’ve been advised that any further impact to my eye would most likely lead to irreparable damage and permanent vision loss.’
