Presbyopia and digital screen use assessed

Presbyopic adults found to be at a disadvantage while using screen devices

Researchers in Greece examined whether correcting presbyopia ameliorates the negative effect of digital screen use in a cross-sectional study of 120 people.

The study participants received correction for presbyopia and returned for a routine follow-up examination. They filled in a questionnaire about time spent online, using digital screens and eye complaints.

Results published in Optometry and Vision Science indicated older adults were at an additional disadvantage while using handheld screen-enabled devices compared to younger adults.

Researchers said older adults were more likely to be presbyopes and need higher near addition, yet increasing near addition does not guarantee greater comfort in the use of smartphones, but rather increases the likelihood of experiencing digital eye strain symptoms.
