This week legendary British musician and actor David Bowie died after an 18-month battle with cancer. Bowie was famed for his multiple reinventions of personae and musical style over five decades.

But there was one striking feature about his appearance which remained constant — his differing eyes. For many years it had been thought that Bowie had a condition known as heterochromia, where the colour of each eye is different.

In fact, Bowie had one permanently dilated pupil as a result of anisocoria. Bowie was reported to have sustained the injury during a fight when he was caught by a fingernail from a punch from his friend George Underwood. Years later, Bowie later thanked Underwood for adding to his ‘mystique.’
