Celebrities donate glasses towards a charity auction by Sightsavers

Celebrities including Liam Gallagher, Lewis Hamilton and Sir Michael Caine have donated a pair of their own glasses towards a charity auction by Sightsavers.

A selection of young lookalikes gathered for a photo-shoot by Rankin to promote the auction this week. Mini models of actress Sarah Jessica Parker (left) and singer Ellla Eyre (centre) were also captured by the photographer, who is a patron of the charity.

In total, 17 celebrities have donated spectacles for this year’s ‘Specs Appeal’ auction, which runs until August 13 on eBay. Other donors included model Kate Moss, singers Paul Weller, Annie Lennox and Cher, and actor Bill Nighy.

The highest bid placed as Optician went to press was £450 for Prada sunglasses donated by Weller.

Mike Straney, director of major giving at Sightsavers, said: ‘The money raised from the auction could help the millions of people in developing countries who need glasses, yet a lack of ophthalmologists, a shortage of equipment or simply a lack of money often means they cannot get the help they need.’
