Sony makes smart contact lens move

Sony is awarded a new patent that describes a contact lens able to record videos

Japanese technology manufacturer Sony has been awarded a new patent that describes a contact lens able to record videos with a user’s deliberate eye blinks.

The design incorporated smart sensors embedded within the materials that can differentiate between an involuntary blink and a deliberate blink.

Patent documents included explanations of blinking time, with Sony having stated that the average period blinking was between 0.2 seconds and 0.4 seconds. Blink times exceeding 0.5 seconds were described as intentional or conscious. Using the blink period, the lens can understand whether the wearer wants to capture images.

The lenses will also contain small piezoelectric sensors, which measure changes in pressure, temperature, acceleration and force. To achieve enough power, the lenses will use a process of electromagnetic induction.
