vCJD doubts remain after tissue tests

Government tests to find the extent of the incubation of vCJD will continue after 3,000 specimens of tonsil/appendix tissue were declared clear of the prion.

Despite last week's announcement chief medical officer Professor Liam Donaldson commented: 'The critical gap in our knowledge remains not having a reliable diagnostic test to detect the presence of the abnormal prion protein at the pre-clinical stage of the disease.' Simon Rodwell, secretary of the Association of Contact Lens Manufacturers, welcomed the findings, but commented that the ACLM was communicating with the Medical Devices Agency and the DoH so that representatives could see for themselves what the procedures were in contact lens laboratories.
