It is all too easy to assume failing acuity is a major factor in car crashes.

I was reminded of this recently as a local campaign was launched in Bristol highlighting the number of car accidents, including sadly some resulting in death, where the driver had been found to either have acuity below the legal standard or had not been wearing their correction at the time of the incident.

This campaign follows hot on the heels of another survey published in the national media which showed how a large proportion of adults tended not to bother wearing their glasses when driving even though they had been advised to do so. Comments such as ‘I only need them at night’ or ‘I feel more comfortable without them’ were widely quoted.
