We should embrace a role where diabetic risk factors are addressed

Diabetic eye disease is the main cause of sight loss in the under-60s.

I mention this in the week when Diabetes UK announced a major increase in the number of diabetics in the UK. Among the many sobering figures was the fact that 10% of the citizens of Bradford are now diabetic. The UK-wide increase is mainly linked with a rise in obesity. So, is this an issue relevant to eye care?

Many years ago, I foolishly made a New Year’s resolution to attend a gym. A condition of membership was being first assessed and then given a ‘training plan’ tailored to my perceived needs. I was less than overwhelmed by an emphasis on ‘regular saunas because of my complexion.’ However, the idea of a strategy ‘menu list’ seemed appropriate and sensible.
