Education is very much in the news at the moment not least so in optics where the General Optical Council’s Education Strategic Review (ESR) is reaching a crucial stage.

The ESR seeks to develop the ideas that will create the framework and content to educate the next generation of optical professionals by looking at the expanding scope of practice, patient need and technological change. Getting this right is crucial and Optician roundly supports Gareth Hadley’s calls for input into the ESR’s consultation which closes in mid-March.

At a national level about the only thing everyone agrees on when it comes to education is its importance. Education is something Britain is good at but sadly politics and finance have come to dominate education policy and serious questions are being asked about the efficacy and sustainability of the university sector.
