One of the big-four contact lens manufacturers has a website promoting its expensive extended-wear lenses. It then goes on to give this advice to reduce the risks of extended-wear related infection which, it says, can lead to blindness: ‘When possible, remove even extended wear contacts before sleeping.’

It does not say under what circumstances removal might not be possible.

Is it not time that this riskiest of modalities, ‘extended-wear’, was finally put to bed and given a very ‘extended sleep’?
