The View from the High Street

Firstly, many thanks to Judy Lea for her excellent contribution to this column since June 2017. I just hope I can live up to her high standards. I wish her all her best with her ongoing roles as College assessor, diabetic CAVA assessor, WOPEC lead assessor, and head of enhanced optical services and - if that wasn’t enough - as an optometrist director of Specsavers Longton.

After 10 years as a hospital optometrist, my return to high street practice has been enjoyable and less difficult than expected. There is much that is different in the hospital environment, but there are also many similarities. Since joining as an ophthalmic director in Daventry in 2016, our practice has undergone a lot of change. In my first week, we were midway through a full shopfit, implementing a new diagnostic area and adding a dual room for audiology. Then the fun began. All the ideas that I’ve always wanted to implement in my very own practice, learning from the team and talking with patients about what they wanted, and quickly realising that a coffee machine was high on everyone’s agenda.
