The AOP would like to thank the almost 2,500 members and non-members who completed its survey into the career aspirations of UK optometrists, and the experiences of employers in recruiting and retaining optometrist staff.

At the June meeting, the AOP’s council considered the headline findings and what picture they begin to build for the sector in a broader sense. The independent Institute for Employment Studies, commissioned by the AOP, will now carry out further analysis of the data.

A key finding among AOP member responses was that 28% said they were locums, referring to flexibility, variety and financial reward as their primary reasons for doing so.
