In recent weeks optics has been in the news for the wrong reasons. The conviction of an optometrist for manslaughter by gross negligence has huge ramifications. Yet, since the trial I have not had any of my patients ask my colleagues or me about this sad event.
This came as a surprise to me as I would think that the public would at least pick up news of such magnitude and discuss it in store. This could highlight the fact that many patients don’t always correlate optometrists and health care, as they might if the case had involved a GP or pharmacist making an error in clinical judgement.
