Commitment to clinical development

As practice Director Suraj Shah explains: 'We constantly refresh and upskill our optometrists through higher qualifications from the College of Optometrists, continuing professional development events with local ophthalmology providers, and practical discussions at clinical team meetings.'

This dedication to continuous learning ensures that the team is always equipped with the latest knowledge and skills in the field. This includes keeping its optometrists at the forefront of glaucoma detection and care.

‘The world of optometry is constantly developing, and Specsavers is committed to supporting our clinicians, and wider teams, to upskill to meet this environment. Meeting patients needs, and delivering practice success, is central to our mission to change lives through better sight and hearing.

‘We constantly upskill ourselves in the most common areas of pathology we are likely to see. This includes supporting our clinicians and the wider team to gain additional qualifications – such as Professional Certificate in Glaucoma. We also offer to cover 50% of the course to take away some of the financial burden of enrolling. Education and putting that education into practice is absolutely vital for us to enhance our professional development.’

Commitment to patient care

Director Suraj Shah points to the delivery of community glaucoma services as just one example where Specsavers is making a difference in Norfolk.

When we detect signs of glaucoma through testing, we refer to the local hospital using the local pathway for confirmation of suspect diagnosis and a management plan to be initiated.

‘For those low risk and stable glaucoma patients, they are discharged from the local hospital eye service into a local monitoring scheme that we provide in the community. Therefore, supporting clinicians to gain additional qualifications to deliver these services is important – and we’re proud to do this.’
